One of the Best
A great entry in a long-running series, with lots of action, good characters, and an unusually twisty plot. Highly recommended to Western fans.

The small Texan
Published in Unknown Binding by Corgi ()
Author: John Thomas Edson
Average review score:

A good read for a hot afternoon!
As with almost any J. T. Edson book, this one is well worth seeking out on the used market. Although Edson's books used to be for sale all over the United States, for some reason they seem to have vanished. This is a major book about Dusty Fog who has been one of my favorate Edson characters since we've both been about the same age. Edson spent many long, hot Texas afternoons collecting the details for this book, driving miles of Texas' backroads & talking to a lot of cowboys in 'watering holes'. (Including some that hadn't changed in over 100 years. If you can get your hands on a copy of 'JT's Ladies' you really have something.

Soldiers of the Old Army (Texas A & M University Military History Series, No 15)
Published in Hardcover by Texas A&M University Press (May, 1990)
Author: Victor Vogel
Average review score:

A well-written memoir!
As a scholar of the interwar U.S. Army, I have found this to be the best written 'memoir' of that period. Vogel, a retired Army officer, served as a private during the interwar period. He does a wonderful job of interlacing facts and personal episodes, and the result is a pleasure to read. I highly recommend this book for those interested in the interwar Army in particular or in the Old Army in general.

Some Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys: A Collection of Articles and Essays (Western Life Series, 4)
Published in Paperback by University of North Texas Press (September, 2000)
Author: John R. Erickson
Average review score:

Written with humor, thoughtfulness, an attention to detail
The fifth and latest volume in the University of North Texas Press "Western Life Series", John Erickson's Some Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys is a collection of articles and essays previously published in a number of local Texas and Oklahoma based publications. Some of the pieces are anecdotal, based on Erickson own experiences and observations regarding life on a working ranch. Other required some research and are more historical accounts of cowboy life. Still other essays showcase Erickson's views on contemporary American life through the lens of cowboying. Erickson is a gifted story teller who writes with humor, thoughtfulness, an attention to detail, and the reader's informed entertainment.

Some Like It Hot: The Climate, Culture and Cuisine of South Texas/Cookbook
Published in Hardcover by Junior League of McAllen (November, 1992)
Authors: Jr League of McAllen Staff Inc and Junior League of McAllen

Best in South Texas!
This is one of the best cook books that has the best recipes for the type of food served in South Texas, part American and part Mexican. A lot of people like Mexican food but no all Mexican food places prepare the true Mexican food as it should be. The book is self explanatory and simple to follow. Recipes are easy to follow and the ultimate outcome of each dish is absolutely delicious. This has been my favorite cook book since it came out. I also use the cook book published before this one by the Jr. League of McAllen League, Inc. called "La Pinata" which is hard to find nowadays. Try it you will like it.

Sons of Texas: Cowboys and Wedding Bells (By Request)
Published in Paperback by Silhouette (February, 1999)
Author: Annette Broadrick

The Callaway Family Saga Continues
Sons of Texas connects with the Callaway family. It is great to catch up on beloved characters from Annette Broadrick's previous books and find out what is going to happen with their offspring. Each story tells not only a love story but a story about a family's love. Clint, Cade, Matt, and Tony carry on the family legacy of love, loyalty, and romance. Only Ms Broadrick can write a story about the main charaters and have us also care about their family and the lesser characters. This only leaves me waiting for more on the Callaway family and their continuing saga.

Sounds of Texas Birds

Daddy, let's listen to bird songs...
This is the second volume of the Texas bird song series.

I got this tape together with the first volume a few years ago and listened to it every now and then. When I would drive the little one around I would put in this tape for him to listen to. Now he is old enough to ask for what he wanted to. Very often he asks to listen to the "bird songs" tape. Now at home when he hears birds singing outside he says excitedly, "Shh, quiet. Bird songs." He is even able to pick out a mockingbird song from a bluejay, not bad for a 2 1/2 year old!

I do like the bird songs and they sound fine. but the voice over narration before each song sounds like the guy is in another room as in the first volume. Maybe the should have asked some local mixmaster DJ to dub the voice to where it sounds normal. This is not a condition of the tapes age as I noticed this as soon as I unwrapped the tape and plopped it in the tape player. This is the only flaw on this tape, and not much of one but there you go. The cassette comes with 12 small photos of the birds in question on the tape.

In Vol.2 you get a few more different birds on the tape (16 as opposed to 12) The birds are the: Olive Sparrow, Laughing Gull, Barn Swallow, Bewick's Wren, Indigo Bunting, Scissor-Tailed Flycatcher, Eastern Tufted Titmouse, Chuck-Will's-Widow, Black Necked Stilt, Marsh Wren, Golden-Cheeked Warbler, Blue Jay, Red-Shouldered Hawk, Ruby-Throated Hummingbird, Northern Cardinal, and the White-Eyed Viero.

I delighted in discovering that the Laughing Gull is name of the gull that follows the gulf coast shrimpers. The sound they make is unmistakable.

South Wind Come

fascinating historical novel with colorful characters
This is a wonderful historical novel about the Civil War & Mexican & Texas wars of independence, written from the viewpoint of a young Mexican girl living in Texas. Seeing historical figures such as the colorful Sam Houston and Ulysses S. Grant through the eyes of the young girl who is their friend gives you an entirely different perspective on these people than you get from a history text. BTW, I usually despise war novels & don't usually read historical novels either. I ran across an excerpt from the book in the newspaper & got hooked.

Long overdue and first-rate
I was impressed by the scholarship and analysis. Having met Jim Noren, I can attest to the depth behind the words. I can't recommend it enough.
